Getting cycling sunglasses for a difficult prescription is a hard task on its own, but you also have to ensure you’re getting the best frame for your needs. Let’s briefly review the two most important aspects to consider in your cycling glasses: frame technology and lens technology.
For more in-depth information, visit our Cycling Glasses Buyer’s Guide to get even more tips on scoring the best cycling sunglasses.
Due to the high-speed nature of cycling, it’s best to get a wrapped frame. However, this gets more challenging the higher your prescription is thanks to a “fishbowl effect” causing distortion at the outer edges of your vision. To mitigate this effect, some wrap around sunglasses come with inserts that clip to the inside of the frame, but inserts have their own limitations. To some cyclists, they make the glasses bulky and don’t give as good peripheral vision. The pro of inserts, though, is that they can handle most any prescription no matter how difficult, and still let you wear the wrap design you want.
Another solution is to go with a flatter frame. Flatter frames can hold thicker high Rx lenses, but they don’t give quite the same coverage and wind protection as fully wrapped cycling sunglasses. You can still get pretty decent coverage with a flatter frame, as long as you pick one that’s the right size for your face. You’ll also want to consider how sensitive you are to wind while cycling.
Having lightweight cycling sunglasses is essential for high prescription cyclists as well. The lenses will add a decent amount of weight on their own, so you’ll want the frame to be as light as possible.
For cycling glasses, the two most important things to consider for lenses are the material and contrast-enhancement. For material, definitely leave the glass and plastic lenses behind. Those work great for your everyday frames, but they’re not a good option for your cycling glasses because of how easily they can shatter. It only takes one fall to leave a scar.
But hope is not lost — polycarbonate and Trivex lenses are shatterproof and the best choice for sports lenses. Nowadays, polycarbonate lenses give a comparable optical clarity to glass, and feature anti-scratch protection to prevent them from getting banged up.
As far as lens colors go, you’ll want to choose a rose or copper base tint. Having a dark grey lens on the road can be dangerous because of the amount of grey already present in cycling. Rose and copper tints enhance contrast to let you spot all the little details on the road and gain the edge over your opponents. Trust us, when we say you’ll feel like you’re seeing better than ever.
