Oakley engineers designed PRIZM Trail and PRIZM Road to be used in different environments. However, you may ride mostly trails but a little road on the way to the trail. Or maybe you are a roadie but hit the trails on the weekends. You might be wondering which lens is best for your riding needs. We are here to explain the differences between PRIZM Trail and PRIZM Road and where they overlap. This will give you a good idea of whether you want two separate sets of lenses to maximize your riding experience.
A little more about PRIZM Lens Technology
Oakley introduced PRIZM Lens Technology in 2014 and it took the optical world by storm. It remains the best lens on the market due to its ability to boost contrast. But not all situations are similar which is why Oakley engineers developed specific PRIZM lenses for different sports. This way you can have a lens that will manipulate the light spectrum in your favor and make everything in your specific environment easier to see.
Similarities Between PRIZM Trail and PRIZM Road
- Boosted contrast to make everything in your environment easier to pick up on
- Details are easier to see
- PRIZM Rose base tint
- 100% UVA, UVB, and UVC protection
- Both PRIZM lenses are offered in prescription!
Differences Between PRIZM Trail and PRIZM Road
- PRIZM Trail has a VLT of 36%-(allows more light through the lens).
- PRIZM Road is darker with a VLT of 20%-(allows less light through the lens).
- PRIZM Trail has a more intense contrast boost
- PRIZM Road still provides contrast but is not as intense as PRIZM Trail
PRIZM Trail works is best suited for mountain biking, trail running, and hiking. This lens provides intense contrast in and out of shadows so you can see every detail on the trial ahead of you. With a VLT of 36%, PRIZM Trail works great in overcast conditions, and at dawn or dusk. For bright and sunny conditions we recommend PRIZM Trail Torch.
PRIZM Road was specifically designed for open road, exposed environments. This lens has just a bit less pop in contrast than PRIZM Trail but offers slightly more protection from the sun with a VLT of 20%. And if you are constantly riding in sunny conditions and need an even darker lens, you can check out our PRIZM Road vs Road Black comparison.
