Sunglass Rob covers the 5 different clear lens options available to you as well as some of the amazing technology and features that go into each one. Watch the video below or keep reading to learn more.
At SportRx, we offer 5 different clear lens options for Maui Jim eyeglasses. We use and love Maui Jim authentic lenses because their technology is simply superior. But when each option is incredible, how do you know which to pick? We explain each of the 5 in detail.
This lens is Rob's personal favorite out of all the Maui Jim clear lens options. It's made of a high index 1.67 material—if you don't know what that means, basically the higher the index the lighter and thinner the lens. You can get some lower indexes and some higher, but 1.67 is a good catch-all for higher prescriptions.
In more specific terms, the Maui Blue Light Protect™ lens prevents eye strain and eye fatigue caused by staring at digital screens. Phones, tablets, computers, and TVs all emit small amounts of blue light which is believed to be linked to long-term retinal damage. In the short run, blue light blocking lenses help with the tiredness and headaches you may feel after a long day of using a computer.
Aesthetically speaking, the Maui Blue Light Protect™ is super great too. Rob points out that oftentimes blue light blocking lenses can be pretty obvious—either they'll have a yellow tint or an iridescent blue coating on the lens surface. The Maui Jim version has neither of those things and simply looks like a perfectly clear lens. If you'd like to see how it looks in motion, Rob is wearing his own pair of Maui Blue Light Protect™ lenses in the video. He mentions that his wife and his mom wear and love them too, so they definitely have the Sunglass Rob stamp of approval on all sides.
If this sounds like the lens for you, you can stop reading now and buy a pair! Otherwise, we have 4 more lens types to get through, so stick around.
This next lens enhances color and contrast to make it easier to read fine print. It's also a great lens for nighttime driving thanks to its boost of contrast in low light conditions. In general, this is a good indoor/nighttime use lens made of the same high index 1.67 material, but aesthetically this lens is more noticeable than the Maui Blue Light Protect™ lens. It has a slight blue or purple tint you'll see when you view these lenses straight on.
To get a bit more into the technical stuff behind the development of this lens, every eye has a structure called the crystalline lens behind the pupil. This lens stiffens and yellows as you age, so the Maui High Contrast™ lens combats this by reducing yellow light transmission while enhancing red, blue, and green light. It's truly a great lens for those who need a little extra help reading your favorite magazine!
Outside of the 2 proprietary lens options, there are 3 other Maui Jim clear lens options for you.
The first is a 1.67 high index clear lens. This is the same material as the two above, but without the same protections offered. It still has all the same treatments (which we'll get into a little further down) and, naturally, amazing optics.
Next we have a 1.60 index lens. This is not as high index, so it's a little less thin and a little heavier. It still has the same treatments of all Maui Jim lenses, however.
Last but not least, you can go for Trivex, a lens material that is becoming more and more popular. It's hard to scratch and is the most impact-resistant of all these lenses, making it a great option if you're concerned about damaging your glasses.
One of our most compelling reasons to go with Maui Jim for your next eyeglasses is their innovation. Their lab is super advanced and can accommodate both very high plus and very high minus prescriptions—Rob is confident they'll work with 99% of people. The lenses they make for you will also be highly accurate and match what your eye doctor wrote on your prescription.
Another excellent perk is the turnaround time. From Maui Jim's lab back to us and then to you, it's the quickest option out of all the brands we sell at SportRx, and one of the shortest turnaround times in general. And like we've been saying throughout, the quality of the lenses themselves is also unparalleled. Maui Jim only uses digital lenses of the highest quality. Digital lenses in general provide better peripheral vision and prescription accuracy, and Maui Jim uses the best of the best.
On top of all of those features, your glasses also include several premium coatings no matter which lens you get:
- Hydrophobic (repels water)
- Oleophobic (repels oil and dirt)
- Anti-reflective on front and back (reduces reflections)
- ClearShell (prevents scratching)
- 100% UV protective
Basically, it's everything you need to keep your glasses in mint condition until it's time to update your prescription. So many ways to say "premium" in one pair of eyeglasses!
