Want to be sure you're spending your FSA money right? Check out our list of eligible and ineligible FSA expenses to know you're getting what you need.

What is FSA?

FSA stands for Flexible Spending Account, and is provided as part of a health insurance plan. The idea is that you set aside a certain amount of pre-tax money each year to be used on medical expenses. Great news—you can spend your FSA money on prescription eyewear from SportRx!

What Qualifies as an Eligible FSA Expense?

Each insurance company has its own specific guidelines, but in general, an eligible FSA expense includes prescription eyewear, such as:

  • Prescription Glasses
  • Prescription Sunglasses
  • Prescription Goggles (Swim goggles, snow goggles, sports goggles, and scuba diving goggles all qualify)

One question we get asked a lot is if a snow goggle plus an insert qualifies. The answer is yes! Because you cannot wear just the insert, the goggle plus its insert is a prescription purchase.

What Qualifies as an Ineligible FSA Expense?

In most cases, non-prescription orders are considered ineligible FSA expenses. This is because non-prescription eyewear is not medically necessary. Parts for glasses (such as screws) are also ineligible.

Other Tips

A good rule of thumb is to think about whether your order has a prescription attached to it. Since each company has its own rules, though, you can also contact your benefits provider to get the full details of eligible and ineligible purchases for your plan.
