Running is one of the least complicated ways to get your heart pumping and body moving. You can do it anywhere and you don’t need much to get going. However, while you may not need much to hit the trails or pavement, having the right running gear can set you up for success. While sunglasses technically don’t fall into the accessories list for running gear, they’re just as important as any other typical running accessory—especially if you want to protect your eyes and the skin around them. Not sure which sunglasses you should wear when running? Explore our running sunglasses guide to discover exactly what to look for in a frame you can wear for miles and learn about some of our favorites!
3 Reasons Why You Need Running Sunglasses
Every runner has a special routine before they hit the pavement, trail, or track. You lace your shoes, do a few dynamic stretches, and take one last sip of water. But do you remember to wear your sunscreen AND sunglasses? You should, and this is why.
1. Protects against UV rays
When you read UV rays, you probably think about heading off to the beach and making sure to put on sunscreen so you don't burn and damage your skin. Well, the same goes for wearing sunglasses on a run—and sunscreen too, for that matter. Did you know that the sun can damage your eyes and burn your eyelids as well? Ouch. Even on a cloudy day, the sun's rays can still peek through and catch you, no matter how fast you run.
2. Encourages perfect form
If you wear sunglasses while running, they can help you perfect your form. Wearing sunglasses forces you to keep your head up, which keeps your eyes forward and aligns your form, all while reducing stress on your back and shoulders—a simple trick to ensure great form while protecting your eyes.
3. Prevents headaches
Whether the sun is out or the clouds are looming above, the beams can be so strong you can't help but squint on a run. Squinting can strain your eye muscles, which can cause discomfort and headaches. The further you run, the tension continues to increase and can remain after you're done. By simply wearing running sunglasses, you'll have an added layer of protection against headaches and achieve more comfortable vision.
What to Look for in Running Sunglasses
So how do you choose the right running sunglasses? The keys to what makes good sunglasses for running are in the frame and lens technology. Take a look at this video explaining the features that make a pair of sunglasses a runner’s—or sprinter’s—best friend. Afterwards, learn how to choose the best sunglasses for your next run!

Frame technology
Vital to any sport—but especially for running and sprinting—is a frame that helps keep you focused. Let’s talk about three key running frame features.
Frame material
Runners need a lightweight, durable frame material that is not only easy to wear for a long time, but hard to break. Choose materials like nylon, TR-90, Grilamid, or Oakley’s proprietary O Matter™ to achieve that feather-light feel you need when it’s time to push through the final lap. Avoid potentially heavy and fragile materials like acetate and metal, which are better suited for lifestyle frames.
Grip
A rubber grip on the nose pads is a must-have in a runner’s sunglasses, but it’s nice to have it on the temple tips, too. Grip combined with a lightweight frame secures your sunglasses in place, and prevents them from bouncing up and down as you run. Also, since running is conducive to sweating, most rubber grip gets tackier with moisture, so there’s no holds barred when you’re setting that new PR.
Fit
When you try on your running sunglasses, make sure the temples don’t put too much pressure behind your ears, because they’ll end up giving you a headache in the long run—pun intended. As for sizing, SportRx has taken the guesswork out of it with your SportRx Frame Width (SFW). Check it out to discover your ideal sunglass size.
Lens technology
Next, we’ll discuss two key lens features that will enhance your running experience.
Lens material
Similar to choosing frame material, choose a lens material that is lightweight and impact-resistant, like polycarbonate or Trivex. While the goal is to keep your sunglasses secure on your face, running has its hazards just like any other sport, so it’s important to be prepared for unexpected obstacles from the environment. Glass lenses definitely don’t belong in a running sunglass, as they’re heavier, prone to shatter, and often more expensive than their more durable counterparts.
Tint
For an enhanced visual experience, definitely go for a rose, copper, or brown lens. These colors boost contrast, improving depth-perception cues that make it easier to read subtle details in the terrain. An amber tint is a great option for contrast enhancement that also lets in plenty of light, and some brands have super sport-specific lens tints, like Oakley’s PRIZM™ Road or PRIZM™ Trail. If you're extremely light sensitive, a Grey tint can be helpful to reduce light exposure as much as possible. Just note that you will lose the helpful contrast that other tints provide.
Are polarized lenses good for running?
Polarization is a filter in the lens that cuts light on a horizontal plane which is where the majority of glare exists. Glare bounces off other objects like water, asphalt, or windows, but polarized lenses filter that harsh light and help enhance your vision. This feature reduces the intensity of the light shining down so you can see better. Basically, a polarized lens means less squinting and eye strain so you can go the distance.
We don’t recommend a polarized lens for trail running because polarized lenses have been known to affect depth perception, which can make it harder to see the small objects in trails like rocks, roots, and ruts. Thankfully, there's less sun exposure on the trails, so with fewer sun rays shining down on your run, you’re less likely to need an increase in glare reduction.
How Should Running Sunglasses Fit?
Whether you're a runner embracing sunglasses for the first time, or looking for your third pair, you may ask yourself, "How should running sunglasses fit?"
As a team of fellow runners and Sports Opticians, we've got you covered with everything you need to know when determining a good fit for your running sunglasses. We'll take a look at each frame component and share how that piece should feel when worn. Finding inspiration from Goldilocks: let's decide what's too big, too small, and just right!

Temples
Temples are one of the most important components that determine a good-fitting vs. ill-fitting frame, especially for running. If they’re too tight, they'll create uncomfortable pressure points that lead to headaches; too loose and your frame will be slipping with each stride. Look for a frame that feels comfortable and secure from the moment you put it on. Easy enough, right? Not quite. Here are two tips for the next time you're trying on running sunglasses:
Tip #1: If you notice any squeezing, this is your cue for a too-small fit. Sure, you may think it's okay while checking yourself out in the mirror of the boutique, but give it more than 10 minutes and you'll realize that it isn't going to last in the long run.
Tip #2: Look down. Do they slip? If you're trying frames on and they immediately slide down your nose, imagine a sweaty run and glancing down at your wrist as you check your watch. Frames that slip when you tilt your head downwards are a sign of being too large or not having enough grip. We recommend rubber pads to ensure extra grip and comfort. As an added bonus—Hydrophilic rubber gets tackier when wet (summer runs, we're looking at you).
Lenses
You're wearing sunglasses to see better during your run, but do you know what to look for in lens shape and fit?
While oversized lenses look great for casual wear or making a fashion-statement, steer away from this style when selecting running sunglasses. Too-large lenses risk fogging since they have a higher chance of touching your cheeks and if they do, you risk experiencing frame bounce, which causes uncomfortable friction.
Be careful not to get too small lenses, either. Your lenses should provide generous coverage to protect from harsh UV rays and nature's elements, so trendy small circle lenses won't do on your run. To get extra sun protection and unobstructed peripherals, look for an 8-base wrap-around style. These lenses provide optimal coverage from all sides.
Make sure the wrap-around lenses are well-contoured to your unique facial features. Today, performance brands are well-aware of the benefits of wearing a proper-fitting lens while enjoying our most-loved sports. When shopping for running sunglasses, keep an eye out for the various lens shapes and think of how that corresponds to your personal facial features. For example, the Flak XS has a flat bottom lens, while the Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 XL has an extended lens that contours your cheeks.
Bridge
Finally, we must look at the frame's bridge to guarantee a good fit. The frame should rest comfortably on your face and not sit too high or too low. If you wear prescription running sunglasses, where the frame sits is even more important. If your lens's optical center is not lining up with your eyes, you will receive a suboptimal visual experience and possible distortion.
In addition to locating the right sitting, the grip is crucial for it to stay in that perfect position. To make sure your frame doesn't slip no matter how much you bounce, here are a few things to look for:
Tip #1: Get rubber pads. We briefly mentioned this above, but rubber pads can make a drastic difference during your run. Without them, you risk a slipping frame and constant readjustments. The rubber provides extra grip and comfort. You can also find several brands that use hydrophilic rubber, which gets tackier the more you sweat.
Tip #2: Consider adjustable nose pads. If you struggle to find a perfect fit, adjustable nose pads solve this. They allow you to customize your frame's placement and the overall fit. We love the fully adjustable nosepiece of the Rudy Project Rydon, which can be manipulated in any direction.
Sizing
Now that you know how running sunglasses should fit, it's time to take that knowledge and pick your sunglasses size. Many brands offer multiple sizes in their frames. When shopping for running sunglasses, pay special attention to the sizing options. For example, the Oakley Flak sunglasses—we’ll go into detail about these later—are available in multiple sizes.
