What to look for in Beach Volleyball Sunglasses

Frame Technology

There are three main components to finding a good frame: fit, coverage, and grip. The right pair encompasses each aspect by giving you protection from the sun, wind, and sand while amping up your game.

For fit, it's important that the glasses are lightweight and snug on your face and around your ears without being uncomfortable.

As far as coverage goes, a wraparound frame is the way to be since peripheries are especially important in volleyball.

And last but not least, grip. The best sports frames will have a hydrophilic material on the nose pads and temples that increases grip with moisture.

Lens Technology

There is more to lens technology than Rx compatibility—you should also consider lens color and material as well as polarization.

Lens color is something down to personal preference and aesthetics, but for a place to start we'll quickly go over three basic lens tints: neutral, rose, and brown.

Neutral, or gray, lenses can have a gray base but appear more blue or green, but in general they help tone down the bright blues of the ocean as well as strong, direct sunlight. The drawback is there tends to be less contrast, but if you anticipate a lot of sunny beach days, neutral is the way to go.

For cloudier settings or if you prefer more contrast, try a rose-colored lens. Lighter tints boost contrast and work in a variety of lighting conditions, but if you're playing in bright sunlight they may not be dark enough.

Meanwhile, the middle of the road is a brown, or copper, lens. These strike a nice balance between being dark and enhancing contrast, but if you're light-sensitive or have especially strong sunlight, these also might not be dark enough.

For lens material, it’s better to choose a lightweight option such as polycarbonate. While glass is clearer, one dive for the ball could spell the end for your lenses. On the other hand, polycarbonate is a good pick for sports lenses because it's impact-resistant and won't shatter even when you hit the ground.

We don't typically recommend polarized sunglasses for sports that involve hand-eye coordination due to its potential effects on depth perception. In the case of beach volleyball, however, we encourage polarization as sunlight reflecting off the ocean can be a serious hindrance to your vision. But if you think you're fine without polarized lenses, more power to you.
