Eyeglass Tyler explains what polarized lenses are and why it's best not to use them for baseball or softball.

What do Polarized Sunglasses do?

Polarized sunglasses have a special polarizing filter that cuts horizontal glare. This is the most common type of glare and it can be found bouncing off of vehicles, asphalt, windshields, and water. Polarized lenses reduce a majority of this harsh glare, making them a great application for everyday sunglasses or for something like fishing.

But for most sports, polarized sunglasses are a detriment.

Downside to Polarization

Polarization can affect depth perception, something that's not ideal for ball sports. In baseball and softball, things move very quickly and you need to see when the ball is coming at you. Also consider there's not much causing glare on your typical field anyway. Dirt, other players, and grass all have very little glare if any at all, so a polarized lens won't help.

Many baseball-specific lenses like Oakley's PRIZM Field are also not polarized. This lack of glare is why.

Overall, when you consider the lack of benefits of a polarized lens in addition to the downside, Tyler's verdict is that he doesn't see why you should use polarized sunglasses for baseball or softball.
