What I doOptician, SportRx
Tim first fell in love with Oakley sunglasses growing up in North Dallas in the early 1990s. His light blue eyes meant he experienced a lot of light sensitivity, especially while outdoors playing sports. He remembers going to stores and seeing all the cool Oakley sunglasses that were popular during that time. He purchased a pair and was instantly smitten. Ever since, he’s loved glasses as a fashion statement for men.
“It's obviously the first thing people see when they look at somebody,” he says. Since Tim doesn’t need prescription lenses, he laments that he missed out on wearing other cool glasses during his youth. His go-to frames then were Oakley’s Big Shield M frames. The brand still manufactures M frames, though current iterations have slight differences in the lens shape.
While attending school full time to earn his degree in Public Health at San Diego State, Tim worked at an eyeglass store to pay bills. As he learned the optician trade, he realized how much he enjoyed it, so he began studying on his own and passed the national board exam to become a certified and licensed optician.
Tim loves working in a career that connects his passion for stylish, cool eyewear, and his love of outdoor sports with helping others enjoy both. He enjoys working for SportRX because the environment lends itself to excellent camaraderie, collaboration, fun, and creativity.
“It’s not like corporate America,” he explains, “where you’re just in your place.” Instead, his career at SportRx allows him to be a part of the overall growth of the company—making decisions and coming up with ideas that help it flourish. His expertise and input can be seen in SportRX's line of sunglasses, whose design he was heavily involved with. This is one of the reasons, he admits, that the SportRx Huckson tops his list of favorite sunglasses. “They feature an athleisure design that looks great no matter if you’re running or just lounging outside.”
One thing that makes for an amazing optician is their ability (and willingness) to solve technical prescription challenges and help people find the type of glasses or sunglasses they really want to wear. Many niche sport glasses feature a wraparound design, and most traditional doctors’ offices don’t really want to touch any of those types of designs or frames, especially when the patient has a high prescription.
This is just because of “lack of knowledge and understanding as well as the ability [or inability] their labs have to manufacture lenses for those types of frames,” explains Tim. This is where SportRx and Tim come in. He designed a docking mechanism for the Oakley Flak 2.0, the company’s No. 1 selling frame, that is interchangeable with existing Oakley lenses. This mechanism allows the lab to create a full-rim design lens that is a bit smaller with a flatter base curve than the lens that comes with the frames. This means people with high prescriptions don’t have to sacrifice any of the other features that come with a sport design.
“We’ve opened up the doors for a lot of people to ultimately get all of the things checked off on their list of what they’re looking for,” Tim says. High prescription wearers, rejoice!
Tim lives in San Diego with his wife and their dog. They both love to be active and spend time out in the beautiful nature and weather of the area. They also have a cabin in Big Bear that presents even more opportunities to put their sunglasses to good use. “My wife probably has a bigger collection of glasses than me because she has prescriptions. I get to style her and get her in some fun frames.”
Tim says that SportRx does things a lot differently than most traditional glasses stores and eye doctors’ offices, especially when it comes to customer service. “Our goal is to make sure people get the best possible eyewear for what their intended use is, and the journey we provide [to get there] is the best in the industry.”
