Oscar was introduced to eyewear in the third grade when he received his first prescription glasses. Like most, he wore the same pair for everything. However, as a young athlete, he quickly encountered the common challenges of wearing glasses during sports—lenses fogging up, frames sliding down due to sweat, and even bouncing uncomfortably while running. These frustrations would later fuel his passion for helping others find eyewear solutions tailored to their active lifestyles.
Oscar’s career began in 2017 when he started working as a lab technician for LensCrafters. In this high-volume lab, he gained hands-on experience fulfilling and dispensing prescription eyewear orders. His expertise in product troubleshooting and adjustments led him to transition into the sales department. To further his career, he pursued certification from the American Board of Opticianry, which earned him a promotion to Lead Lab Technician at LensCrafters North County.
While working in this leadership role, some of Oscar’s former colleagues—who had moved on to SportRx—encouraged him to join them in crafting and selling prescription sports eyewear. Intrigued by the opportunity, Oscar joined the SportRx team in 2019, bringing his extensive lab experience and customer-focused approach. He quickly became the designated Returns Optician, specializing in resolving prescription challenges and ensuring customer satisfaction.
At the core of Oscar’s role is the SportRx See Better Guarantee—a commitment to providing customers with eyewear that meets their specific needs. If a customer isn’t completely satisfied with their glasses, sunglasses, or goggles, they can return them within 45 days for a full refund or a remake that better suits their requirements.
Handling return cases allows Oscar to apply his expertise in Rx analysis and troubleshooting. If a customer is dissatisfied with their eyewear, he helps them understand why the original order didn’t work and guides them toward a better solution. He describes this process as “a rewarding experience”, knowing that each adjustment brings someone closer to clearer, more comfortable vision.
Giving someone custom prescription eyewear is not easy, especially when the eyewear is specific to their sport or lifestyle. “I work with the customer through their various activities and uses they want the glasses for,” says Oscar. There’s no such thing as “too much information” a customer can provide us with when crafting prescription glasses, given the price point and everyday value they provide.
For biking and everyday wear, Oscar’s top choice is the Rudy Project Incas XL, which he pairs with Vermillion/High Contrast lenses and Clear-to-Brown Transitions that SportRx makes. This frame’s adjustable nose pads and temple tips offer a secure, customized fit, while the interchangeable dock system lets him swap out lenses based on lighting conditions.
"I have a Green Smoke set of lenses to swap out for sunny days," Oscar explains, “and I use them for about 80% of my bike rides.” The Incas XL features a 4-base interchangeable dock, allowing the lab to use a flatter base curve to minimize lens thickness and distortion, enhancing both comfort and clarity.
When recommending frames for smaller face shapes or kids, Oscar’s go-to is the Rudy Project Rydon Slim + RX Dock. Like the Incas, this model has highly adjustable temples and nose pads for a personalized fit. The prescription dock also allows the lab to use a flatter lens blank, accommodating stronger prescriptions while maintaining essential curvature for sports performance.
Oscar is excited about SportRx’s growth and the in-house lab currently being developed. He gives “huge kudos to Tim, Ellie, and Dluna” for their efforts in setting up the new facility and looks forward to working with advanced lens edging and surfacing technology.
Oscar is a strong advocate for eye protection, recognizing the increasing screen time and outdoor exposure to harmful UV light people face daily. He always recommends Blue-Light AR coating for eyeglasses and polarized sunglasses for outdoor enthusiasts.
"Sun damage can seriously impact your vision, and nothing’s worse than getting a headache from light pollution when you should be enjoying your time outside," he advises.
Whether fine-tuning a prescription, ensuring a customer’s perfect fit, or educating people on the importance of eye health, Oscar Gonzalez is dedicated to helping every athlete and adventurer see their best.
