Why Everyone Should Wear HEV Blue Light Blocker Glasses

We spend the majority of our waking hours staring at screens. Computers, smartphones, TVs, tablets, gaming consoles – the list goes on. We’re attached to our devices. And unless technology goes away anytime soon, our dependency on them won’t go away either.

These devices emit potentially harmful blue light that penetrate the eyes, a concern for irreversible damage and vision loss. Not only that, we are exposed to harmful blue light from the sun, too. Bottom line: Adults and kids alike need to be wearing HEV blue light blocker glasses for computer and beyond. Our optical health depends on it.

What is Blue Light?

Blue light – like UV light – is a part of the visible light spectrum. The harmful blue light we should be concerned about falls within 380 nanometers to 470 nanometers on the visible light spectrum. These harmful blue light waves are also referred to as HEV light (high energy visible light) or short-wave light.

Where Does Blue Light Come from?

HEV blue light can be found in just about anything, ranging from natural light sources like the sun, to artificial light sources like computers, TVs, smartphones, and tablets.

The Potentially Harmful blue light sources include:

- The Sun
- Computer Screens
- Smartphone & Tablet Screens
- TV Screens
- LED/LCD Screens
- Fluorescent Lights (CFL lighting)

The Harmful Effects of Blue Light

How Blue Light Affects Eyes

HEV blue light penetrates deep into the eye where it may cause irreversible damage to the retina. The retina’s job is to convert light into images; it receives light through the lens and then sends a signal to the brain so we can interpret the image we’re seeing. When blue light enters the eye, it becomes defocused, causing the eyes to work tirelessly in an effort to refocus the light.

Additionally, overexposure to HEV blue light may damage retinal cells, which may lead to macular degeneration and a number of other negative implications to our health.

Blue Light & Macular Degeneration

The macula is located in the central part of the retina and its job is to sharpen our vision and interpret color. Light sensors within the macula provide detail and clarity to our vision. Blue light may damage these sensors, causing them to send a distorted picture to the brain. Over time, blue light is suspected to be a risk factor for damage to the macula, which may lead to its deterioration (macular degeneration) and eventually lead to vision loss.

Blue Light & Computer Eye Strain and Eye Fatigue

Digital eye strain is the number one computer-related problem in the U.S. The longer we stare at our computer screens, the more likely we are to experience symptoms like headaches, eye strain, eye pain, eye fatigue, dry eyes, and blurred vision.

Whether or not we have prescription needs, computer glasses that block harmful blue light is imperative for preserving optical health.

Blue Light & Insomnia

We rarely think about how blue light affects sleep – and let’s be honest – most of us don’t power down our devices until bedtime. Melatonin is the hormone that signals our bodies to sleep and rest daily. Blue light exposure from a specific range has been shown to suppress melatonin production, leading to sleep disruption and insomnia. As we know, this can lead to underproductive workdays, brain fogginess and fatigue. And nobody has time for that.

The Solution: SportRx BLUEdefense
