What to Wear to Play Golf

While there are some distinctions between what's acceptable for men and women to wear on the golf course, both have high standards. Women have the option of more styles to choose from, but there's an emphasis on keeping it modest. Men's golf attire is less versatile, but there are plenty of ways to add a personal touch and still comply with golf etiquette.

Shirts

When it comes to choosing a top for the golf course, avoid T-shirts. Men should stick with collared shirts, while women are permitted to wear collared, non-collared, or even sleeveless tops. Either way, shirts are expected to be tucked in at all times.

Bottoms

Men and women alike should comply with wearing shorts or skirts that reach at least to your fingertips. Slacks, dress shorts, and golf skirts are the most common types of bottoms to golf in. While each course differs slightly, in general jeans, sweats, and yoga pants aren't permitted.

Sweaters/Jackets

Jackets and sweaters are reserved for chilly weather. Many golfers like to use vests, sweaters, or windbreakers for a polished, layered look. Jean jackets and hoodies are off-limits.

Shoes

While running shoes are typically permitted on a golf course, traditional golf shoes will assist you with a more stabilized swing and better all-day comfort. Many courses have a ban on metal spikes and require your golf shoes to have hard rubber or plastic spikes instead. Men's shoes are often limited to white, black, or brown, but a stylish sock choice is encouraged to complement the rest of your outfit.

Women's golf shoes tend to come in a greater variety of colors. What shoes should you leave behind? Sandals, boots, and—you guessed it—high heels.

Golf Accessories for the Course

Now that you've established what to wear to the golf course, let's take it to the next level. There are some unspoken rules of golf etiquette, and we're here to tell you what accessories you need to fit right in.

Hats

Since golf is a sport played almost entirely in direct sunlight, protection from the sun is imperative. Visors and baseball caps are popular options for both men and women, but straw hats, bucket hats, and beanies (weather-permitting) are acceptable as well. Leave your cowboy hats and fedoras at home, and make sure to remove your cap upon entering a building. Also, hats must be forward-facing at all times.

Sunglasses

Hey, they're our specialty—but we really do think golf sunglasses, especially with prescription lenses, are vital to your golf wardrobe. On top of protecting your eyes from sun damage, they're a tool to boost your performance. Golf sunglasses have customized lens technology that enhances colors and contrast, helping you to spot the ball and changes in the terrain with ease. They're also equipped with other sports performance features to keep them secure and comfortable even as you sweat. And let's face it, they kick up your style a notch.

Glove

Many golfers opt to wear a single glove on their non-dominant hand. The glove helps you keep a tight grip on your club, especially in hot weather.

Personal Belongings

Most golf bags have a pocket that can hold your essentials, like your cell phone, keys, and wallet. It's recommended to use this method rather than carrying a purse or backpack with you all day in addition to your golf bag.

Other Tips For Shopping Golf Attire

  • Wear only one piece of brightly colored or patterned clothing.
  • Try to match colors on your belt, hat, and shoes.
  • Choose color combinations that contrast one another (i.e. a white shirt with navy slacks).
  • White golf shoes are a great choice because they match with most outfits.
  • Do not wear black shoes with white socks.
