From a bike commuter's perspective in San Diego, Bike Sharrows are amazing. They exist to remind cars that the road is a multi-use road; and in fact, all roads in California are bike lanes. The far most right-hand lane on every street is a bike lane.

If you're unfamiliar with what the sharrows look like, they're pretty self-explanatory. It's a picture of a bike with a couple of arrows, and because they're meant for sharing, the name sharrows is pretty fitting.

If you're a cyclist in San Diego, you probably know Santa Fe Street. It's a main bicycle artery that connects the Rose Canyon Bike Path to Mission Bay and Pacific Beach. So if you're doing long miles North to South and vice versa, chances are, you've rode past our SportRx sunglasses showroom and can recognize this cycling (and runners!) pit stop we have set up right outside:

Although 4,000 cyclists per week on average ride by, Santa Fe Street is horrible for cyclists. It's a narrow two-lane road, there's no bike lane, and to make things worse, there's a lot of big industrial trucks that use it. We're ecstatic the city has installed these sharrows to say, "Hey! Bikes belong on this road too!" In addition to the sharrows, there are also signs up and down Santa Fe Street that say, "Bicycles may use full lane," which is also pretty cool.

Sharrows are helping to make Santa Fe Street a safer route for cyclists and bike commuters, and are also a great invitation for everyone to get on their bike and ride a little bit more. It was really convenient that these sharrows were installed just in time for this year's 2015 Bike to Work Day! In addition to having a really successful Bike to Work Day, and as far as we could tell, there were no accidents on Santa Fe Street that day. Hopefully sharrows can help make that everyday.

There are more sharrows to come in San Diego. Keep an eye out for sharrows on 30th Street in South Park and in Encinitas along the 101. Although sharrows are not the end-all-be-all solution to maintaining safe roads for cyclists, they certainly do its part to help keep sharing the road a top-of-mind priority.
