Inserts have a time and place, and they're not right for everyone. Rob goes over the two main reasons why you might consider one.
1. A Strong Prescription
Though SportRx specializes in making wrap frames with prescription lenses and technology's come a long way in recent years, we can only go up to a certain point with many wrap frames. If you wear a wrap frame in prescription, you may experience a "fishbowl effect" causing distortion at the edges. Inserts are a great way to let you get that sports wrap while avoiding this effect, which ranges from uncomfortable to giving you headaches.
2. Interchangeable Lenses
Even if your prescription isn't that strong, you may want to get an insert if your sunglasses have interchangeable lenses. Insert Alternatives
Rob points out that inserts aren't the only high Rx solution. One of his alternatives is Rudy Project's optical dock system (check out our review of that), which is an extra piece that wraps around the lens. It both hides the lens thickness and makes it slightly flatter to be able to hold a higher prescription.
Another alternative that Rob suggests is a recent trend among many sunglass brands, a flatter frame with sport capabilities. Rudy Project's Spinair collection is an example of this style—they look like everyday sunglasses, but have rubberized nose pads and temples. Their temples are also fully adjustable, and the flat frame makes them more Rx-friendly.
Rob's last alternative is for those who have very strong prescriptions, and for whom the dock and the casual look aren't options. He recommends the Rudy Project Exception, which comes with an insert and is designed around that insert. It can accommodate very high prescriptions as a result.
