VLT Chart

VLT or Visible Light Transmission, is the amount of light that passes through the lens. A higher VLT percentage is best for cloudy and dark conditions, while a lower percentage is ideal for bright and sunny days. Most of the PRIZM™ Snow lineup is suitable for bright to mid-range conditions, or what Oakley calls “Sun & Clouds.” Find the right PRIZM™ Snow lens for any environment, including night skiing! Bright Sun Lenses

For the brightest, bluebird conditions, opt for the Oakley Bright Sun lens category. There is only one lens in this category—PRIZM™ Snow Black Iridium. This is an extremely dark lens that allows less light through than most other lens options out there.

PRIZM™ Snow Black Iridium

PRIZM™ Snow Black Iridium is the darkest tint in the PRIZM™ Snow collection. It keeps your vision crisp on sunny days in the snow. This lens has a light transmission of 5.5%. It’s available in sunglass lenses as well, but we don't recommend it for your everyday activities, such as driving. You shouldn't wear lenses darker than 8% VLT for driving.

Sun & Clouds Lenses

The next category is Sun and Clouds. PRIZM™ Sun and Clouds lenses are designed for everyday conditions. If you’re not skiing in extreme weather or at night, these are the lenses to get. They work well for average days on the mountain. This category features snow goggle lenses with and without a mirror coating. They are listed in order of lowest to highest VLT percentage. It's hard to go wrong with any of these lens colors.

PRIZM™ Snow Dark Grey

PRIZM™ Snow Dark Grey is like PRIZM™ Black without the mirror coating on the outside of the lens. It is the darkest lens in the Sun and Clouds category. The absence of the mirror gives this lens a stealthier appearance than the flashy PRIZM™ Black lens. You may also see more of the garnet-colored base tint. Even though it looks like a much lighter tint, this is another great lens for bright conditions and it won't leave you hanging when the clouds roll in.

The lowest VLT in this group is 13%, and the highest is 17%, making these goggles perfect for a variety of conditions. While their VLT is similar, you will notice some differences in tone, contrast, color, and of course, aesthetics.

PRIZM™ Snow Argon Iridium

PRIZM™ Argon is a new lens for the 2023/24 season. If you’re wondering where PRIZM™ Jade went on this list, it has been discontinued. The new Argon lens makes up for this loss in a big way. It is very similar in functionality to Jade, with a stellar appearance. Argon Iridium snow lenses have a mild blue mirror exterior look. The VLT on Jade and Argon only differs by 1%. Jade had a 13% VLT, and the new Argon has a VLT of 14%. The other difference between Argon and Jade is the base tint. Jade featured a Rose base tint, whereas Argon features a Garnet base tint. Argon is easily going to be a new fan favorite.

PRIZM™ Snow Garnet

PRIZM™ Snow Garnet is another Sun and Clouds lens, but features a higher visible light transmission (19%) than the iridium Sun and Clouds lenses listed above. Therefore, this lens is a good choice for varied conditions, but may be a bit too transparent in true bluebird conditions. This lens does not feature a mirror coating.

PRIZM™ Snow Rose

PRIZM™ Rose is the final option in the Sun and Clouds lineup. This is the lightest lens of the bunch with a VLT of 26%. Therefore, it is better suited to cloudy days. This lens does not have a mirror coating. Rose has been discontinued in many goggle models, but is still available in a few styles.

  • VLT: 26%
  • Base color: Rose

Snow & Overcast Lenses

If you tend to find yourself in snowy, overcast, or even whiteout conditions when you ride, these are the lenses for you. They let the most light through and offer the most color and contrast enhancement. The following PRIZM™ Snow lens options are not suitable for sunny conditions.

PRIZM™ Snow Persimmon

PRIZM™ Snow Persimmon brings back the popular tint we’ve seen in the past. The difference here is the addition of PRIZM™ contrast. The original Oakley Persimmon lens has now taken a back seat due to the popularity and superb performance only this new type of lens can provide. This lens functions very similarly to Hi Pink, but doesn’t have a mirror coating. Read our blog to see all the differences between PRIZM™ Snow Persimmon and PRIZM™ Snow Hi Pink Iridium.

Which Oakley PRIZM Snow Lens is Best for Skiing?

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. For intense, bright bluebird days, we recommend PRIZM™ Snow Black. On whiteout days choose PRIZM™ Snow Hi Pink Iridium or Clear. Sapphire, Sage Gold, Rose Gold, Argon, and Torch Iridium lenses are great options for an all-condition lens. Picking up on the details on the mountain is of utmost importance for advanced and beginner snow athletes alike. The contrast needed to do so is exactly what makes a PRIZM™ lens superior. Whether you are navigating the bunny hill or charging down double blacks, the boost in contrast makes everything in your environment easier to see.
