Maui Jim PolarizedPlus2 Lens Technology
Before we get into polycarbonate lenses specifically, we have to tell you a bit about Maui Jim's amazing lens technology. All Maui Jim sunglasses, prescription or not, have PolarizedPlus2® technology. They are not only polarized to block 99.9% of glare, they enhance color and contrast to help you see the world in a whole new way.
Maui Jim sunglasses have all kinds of features to protect your eyes even more. They're 100% UV protective, have HEV blue light protection, and include scratch-resistant, hydrophobic, and oleophobic lens coatings. Those last two repel water and oil to keep your sunglasses clean longer and make them easier to clean.
Now let's get into polycarbonate lenses and what they do.
Maui Jim Polycarbonate Lenses
Polycarbonate lenses are known for their impact resistance and for being good for sports. It's not the clearest lens material nor is it difficult to scratch—though it's come a long way in recent years—so you'd get polycarbonate lenses because of their shatter protection. If you're mountain biking, road cycling, or doing any other sport with wind or debris involved, you'll want that unbreakable lens.
Polycarbonate is also the most inexpensive material from Maui Jim. Maui Jim sunglasses aren't cheap in any case, but if you want to save a little money this is the way to go.
However, this material is a little more limited than other Maui Jim lenses. You can get polycarbonate lenses in prescription from Maui Jim, but only the 4 original bi-gradient lens tints (Neutral Grey, HCL Bronze, Maui Rose, and Maui HT) are available. If you want to get other features like mirror coatings, you'll have to get a different lens material.
Incidentally, if you want the best scratch resistance, give MauiBrilliant a try. It's our favorite lens material!
