What You Need

  • A skull cap. This can be found at most sporting goods stores.
  • Prescription goggles/glasses. Check to see if the prescription is correct, too.
  • Your football helmet. To test the fit and sizing, try your goggles or glasses on before practice or a game.

What to do

First, put on the goggles or glasses. Make sure they fit well and you experience no discomfort from either the prescription lenses or the frame itself.

Next, put the skull cap on. This will help hold your goggles or glasses in place.

Last, put the football helmet on. If your football helmet is already snug without wearing any glasses, consider getting slightly thinner pads on the inside to make room. Your glasses might not fit otherwise, or dig into the sides of your head. But getting the right size ear pads will help hold the frame in place.

A common misconception is that you can't wear frames with temples under a football helmet. If you have the size and padding right, you certainly can. We also prefer these types of frames over goggles with a full strap. A tight strap pulls the goggles close to your face and can increase the risk of fogging. Fogging is already a big issue with football, and while an anti-fog coating is highly recommended, there's only so much it can do. That said, if you choose a frame with temples and get an anti-fog coating, it won't be as much of an issue.

If you've read some of our other football blogs, you might know that we're big fans of the Wiley X Youth Force collection. And for good reason—their sports frames are all convertible, meaning you can wear them either with temples or a strap depending on your preference. The Helmet Spex are made to fit under a football helmet. The ultra-flexible strap can be adjusted for most head sizes, and the rubber grips contour to the ears and help keep the goggles in place. Like the Gamer, the Helmet Spex have extra padding on the nose bridge to hold them away from the face and reduce fogging. Available in either a medium (53 eyesize) or large (58 eyesize) fit.

Another option is Progear Eyeguard. You can get these goggles either with temples or a strap, but they're not interchangeable.
