History of the US Open

111th U.S. Open Championship

Under the supervision of the United States Golf Association (USGA), the US Open Championship has been held annually since 1895. The tournament is open to both amateur and professional golfers and is the second of four major championships. It is scheduled in June each year, and the final round is played on the third Sunday of the month. Because of this, the final round is usually played on Father's Day. Since 1898, the competition has consisted of 72 holes of stroke play. Fun fact - the first US Open was played in 1895 on a nine-hole course. There were 11 competitors and the final prize was $150. Fast forward to 2019 where the winner was awarded a $12.5 million purse.
